The graphic depicts a spectrum of hazing behaviors in relation to how often they occur and how likely they are to be recognized as hazing.

Intimidation behaviors occur with high frequency and low recognition rates. These behaviors may include:

  • Deception
  • Assignment of demerits
  • Silence periods with implied threats for violence
  • Social isolation of new members
  • Use of demeaning names
  • Expecting certain items to always be in one’s possession

 

Harassment behaviors occur with moderate frequency and moderate recognition rates. These behaviors may include:

  • Verbal abuse
  • Threats or implied threats
  • Asking new members to wear embarrassing attire
  • Skit nights with degrading or humiliating acts
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Sexual simulations

 

Violence behaviors occur with low frequency and high recognition rates. These behaviors may include:

  • Forced alcohol or drug consumption
  • Beating, paddling, or other forms of physical assault
  • Branding
  • Forced consumption of vile substances
  • Water intoxication
  • Abduction/kidnapping
  • Sexual assault
